Weary Traveler

Our barbecue grill sits on the deck in back of the house. My husband sometimes forgets to shut the lid on the grill. So, it stays open pretty often. One evening, I was talking to my son on the phone and just happened to look out the back door. There sitting in the open barbecue grill and staring at me was a pigeon. I walked right up to the glass in the back door. The pigeon didn’t move and continued to stare at me.

I called out to my husband and said, “There’s a pigeon sitting in your barbecue grill!” He headed out the door intent on shooing the bird. I went on about my business and passed by the door a few minutes later. My husband was still outside and was making cooing noises at the bird. I opened the door to ask him what in the world he was doing. He stopped me and said, “Don’t scare it! It’s tired and needs to rest!”

When he came in the house, he told me it was a homing pigeon. He had been trying to get close enough to see if there was an address or phone number on its leg band. The bird was very tired, too tired to fly. It wasn’t afraid of people. But, we couldn’t get close enough to catch it. I gave it some bread. And the little bird spent the night in the barbecue grill. It slept with its little head tucked in its wing. The next morning when I took it some water, it flew. I hope the weary little traveler was able to find its way home.

We’re all just weary travelers, aren’t we? We are traveling through this world in search of our heavenly home. And Jesus Christ, the Son of God, lived as a man and carried with Him a message of hope so we can find our way there.

Galatians 6:9 (KJV) And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
