The Crash

It was an odd night. One like I had never seen before. And I haven’t seen one like it since. Standing outside, I could hear voices from a quarter of a mile away. People speaking normally in the distance sounded like they were talking right on my front porch. I could hear every word they said just as plain as if they were talking to me. I could see all manner of flashing lights in the distance and could hear the sirens of emergency vehicles.

It was dark and I couldn’t find my husband. He always tells me when he leaves even if he is just going over to the neighbor’s. But, his truck was gone and he hadn’t said a word about going anywhere. He didn’t answer his phone. There was this huge commotion up the road and a helicopter had just landed in a nearby field. I started getting really worried.

Finally, my husband called home. Earlier in the day, a young neighbor boy had stopped by the house to let us know that his grandfather had passed away. The boy was riding his four-wheeler from house to house to tell all the neighbors. An hour or two later, my husband, who is very hard of hearing, was outside working in the garden. And from a quarter of a mile away, he heard the sound of metal scrapping the concrete. He said that he knew in that moment that the neighbor boy had wrecked his four-wheeler.

My husband jumped in his truck and headed up the road to see if he could find him. He found the boy lying motionless in the road in a place that made it difficult to see him until you were almost on top of him. My husband parked his truck so that coming traffic could see it and turned on his flashers. Then he called 9-1-1. The boy wasn’t wearing a helmet and my husband thought he was dead. He stayed with the boy, talking to him and trying to help keep him calm when he came to a bit. The rescue team loaded the boy on the helicopter and took him to the hospital.

We often don’t know the reason why bad things happen. But, there were a lot of miracles that night.

Miracle #1 – Like I mentioned, my husband is hard of hearing. But, the wind was blowing in such a way that sound from the highway was carried clearly to our house.

Miracle #2- My husband immediately recognized the sound of the crash and knew the boy needed help. He responded without hesitation.

Miracle #3- No one ran over the boy while he was lying in the highway.

Miracle #4- The boy survived the crash.

And I’m sure there were probably more miracles because God was looking out for the boy that night. And by His grace and mercy the boy lived. Praise be to the Lord!!

Hebrews 4:16 KJV- Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
