Just One

I love the story written several years ago by Loren Eiseley about the starfish that washed upon the beach. In the story, thousands of starfish were laying in the sand on the beach. A man was walking along the beach and he saw all of the starfish but chose to do nothing because he couldn’t put them all back in the water. The man came across a child, who was throwing the starfish back in the water one at a time. And the man said to the child, “You can’t save them all so what does it matter?” As the child was throwing another one back into the ocean he replied, “It matters to this one.”
What if the man had helped the child? And what if others who happened along joined in as well? They might not have saved them all. But with just one at a time, they could save many.
My nephew is a walking billboard for Christ. Every time I see him, he is wearing a Christian t-shirt. He also has a “Jesus Loves You!” bumper sticker that covers the entire back bumper of his car. He is a very active person, always going places, doing things and is seldom at home. How many people do you think are reading those messages each day? How many hearts are being touched by those words?
If God’s word is shared and touches just one heart that He has prepared to receive His message, then it matters to that one. Then, what if that person also shares the Lord’s message and the next one does too and the next one and so on…how many could be saved?!
There is a saying- would you rather have a million dollars or a penny that doubles each day for 30 days? Can you believe that starting with just one penny and doubling it each day that you will have over five million dollars at the end of 30 days?! Amazing, huh?!
So, don’t get overwhelmed in your service to the Lord. You don’t have to try and save the whole world all at once. You only need to start with just one..
Matthew 9:37-38 (KJV) Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
