I made some birthday treat bags for our nephews the other day. And looking at the juice boxes and fruit roll-ups all tucked into a zip lock bag, my first thought was this looks like something my grandma would do!!

My grandma was a very hard working woman. Some of the happiest times of her life were spent working as the head cook in a rural country school for many years. She absolutely loved the kids!! And just being around them and feeding them everyday brought her great joy. She didn’t drive, so she rode the school bus everyday back and forth to work. It was a hard job and because of the school’s limited budget, she often worked alone. She prepared two meals a day for the kids, breakfast and lunch. And the meals often included her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, which were awesome!! The school only went thru the eighth grade and the high school kids had to be bused off the mountain to go to school in town. Grandma would fix the high school kids cinnamon rolls for the road when they stopped by in the mornings!

Grandma made treat bags every year for “her kids” that came by her house trick or treating. She’d make a bunch of bags and she would count them so she would know how many kids had been there. I helped her get her treat bags ready one year. She would put stuff in them like orange slice candy and English walnuts, because that’s what she liked! And to her those were a real treat! I was pleased to see that she also had candy that the kids would probably like too. And the kids came because they really loved my grandma!!

I miss both of my grandmas. And it makes me happy to think that I might be a little bit like them. They were wonderful ladies. And I treasure their memories and the time I was blessed to spend with them.

James 4:14 (KJV) Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
