Can’t Take It with You

A man once traveled several miles to an event for his work. Before leaving the event, he stuffed his shirt pocket full of the free chocolates that were on the table. During the long ride home, the man fell asleep. The combination of the man’s body heat and the rubbing seat belt mashed the melting chocolate all over the front of the man’s nice dress shirt!! His shirt was probably ruined. And it just goes to show you that there are things that you just can’t take with you.

Remember the parable of the rich man, who tore down his barns to build bigger barns, so he could store even more goods? “But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”

Many of us have a lot of earthly treasures such as nice homes, vehicles, lots of clothes, jewelry etc. And I’m not saying that these things are bad. But we have an excess of what we need, like in the story where the man had way too much chocolate! So, don’t concentrate on gathering earthly treasures which like the Bible says “moth and rust doth corrupt”. But seek to store up heavenly treasures which will never decay or ruin and will glorify the Lord instead.

2 Corinthians 10:17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

Matthew 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

Luke 12:16-21 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
